The Day After

Hectic activity is the flavor of the season. The country is inevitably headed towards a mid-term poll and the Left parties do not seem to be interested in making an effort to avert it. For the past three years they had been enjoying the kind of influence in governance that the voters did not mandate and yet there were numerous occasions when they buckled under the UPA pressure on issues that were of vital interest to the working class. Not surprisingly, the BJP taunted them over their continued barking and not biting. Finally, they have chosen the nuclear deal with the USA as reason serious enough to disrupt the life of the current Lok Sabha. The Congress too seems to be looking forward to the mid-term in the hope of opening a new chapter in its truncated existence post- Babri Masjid demolition. It is putting a new team in place in order to present its younger and vibrant face. Following the footsteps of his father, Rahul Gandhi has assumed new responsibility in the party and has also cobbled his own team. It would soon be time for the voters to pass their judgment on what the younger Gandhi has to offer them. Meanwhile, experts are busy debating the real motive of the Left in imposing a mid-term poll when it is obvious to all they would be at the losing end. The experts are also excited about the prospects of the BJP in the wake of the Sethusamudaram project and the controversy that it has generated. The BJP believes that the issue is as emotive as the Ramjanambhoomi Temple and is sure to carry it to power. Experts were still debating about it when we went to the press. Meanwhile as the euphoria of the festive season engulfs the country, the sporting public oscillates from one extreme to another. It is becoming obvious that the people are yearning for consistent sporting success at the international level. To achieve that and be truly labeled as the champions there needs to be sports culture in the society. It is our opinion that infrastructure alone does not develop it and that sports administrators need to do more to draw the young to the playfields for various games.
