A day
after getting bail on October 24, actor Salman Khan was released
from Thane jail. The order of the court and police verification of
the surety were delivered to the jailor in the evening. The
procedure for verifying surety is time-consuming, but in this case
the clearance was expedited. Earlier, Salman’s family had maintained
that the actor would be released later. A large number of media
persons had gathered in the front entrance of the jail, but in true
‘filmi’ style Salman was whisked away by relatives to an undisclosed
location.
It maybe recalled that Salman’s bail plea was
rejected four times earlier. But luck did not elude him the fifth
time. A Mumbai court rejected Salman Khan’s bail plea for the fourth
time in a row, giving indications that his celebrity status may not
help him get away in the hit-and-run case. The court decision to
grant him bail this time was more or less expected in legal circles
after the police filed a charge-sheet against the actor.
The Mumbai High Court had earlier ordered the
film star to pay interim compensation of Rs. 10 lakh to the person
killed when the actor allegedly rammed a Toyota Landcruiser into a
bakery in suburban Bandra. The court also ordered the actor to pay
Rs. three lakh to the seriously injured and Rs. 1.5 lakh to the
persons who sustained simple injuries in the accident. Salman had
allegedly rammed his vehicle into a bakery on September 28 killing
one person and injuring four others.
Soon after the hit-and-run incident, to make
matters worse, Salman’s family had tried to bribe an eyewitness to
tell the police that it wasn’t Salman who drove the car when the
mishap occurred. That tilted public sentiment against the actor and
forced Home Minister Chhagan Bhujbal to chide the Mumbai police to
speed up the probe against him. Later, they asked him to surrender
his passport until the completion of the probe into the accident.
The actor has been asked not to leave the country and co-operate
with the police. The court also issued orders to the actor's family
and friends asking them not to meet or contact any of the victims.
Khan seems to have been courting controversies
all through his film career till date. A ladies’ man with a cute
smile and lovable looks, he always had the tag of a villain also
wherever he went or whatever he did. And the latest came when he was
poised to scale new heights with a Hollywood movie.
Things never seem to work perfectly well for this
Bollywood brat. Khan hogged limelight three years ago after he shot
down black bucks, an endangered species, on an outing into
Rajasthan’s wilderness, accompanied by co-actors Saif Ali Khan,
Sonali Bendre and Neelam.
The episode which made the largest number of headlines, the
latest one apart, was the break-up of his affair with former Miss
World and star Aishwarya Rai. Khan even managed to create a flutter
outside Rai’s residence one night.
