The Day After

Who targets Anil Ambani?

The day Reliance Power was enlisted a dubious record that will long haunt Anil Ambani was made. For the first time Reliance shares had plummeted and more than four million share holders lost their fortune. Many among them had borrowed money to invest in a name that had always created wealth for them. Even more worrisome was the fact that along with Reliance Power the shares of other companies of Anil Ambani too lost money. First it was thought that since people had borrowed money to invest therefore they were selling shares from ADAG companies to pay off the debts but there are strong rumors that senior executives of big brother Mukesh Ambani’s group were instrumental in pulling the Reliance Power down. Anil Ambani has even demanded that inquiries be made in the debacle by SEBI. Is it happening in Dhirubhai Ambani’s family?

Pitching for agriculture

Believe it or not but the younger politicians in the Congress are the ones who are pressurizing their High Command into formulating new and innovative policies for agriculture. This is a welcome sign for it signifies that urbane they might be but they have their feet firmly planted on the ground. It also demonstrates that this generation of young politicians is willing to listen to sociologists and rural oriented economists for they have understood that the widespread unrest in villages and tribal areas is because of the continued neglect of their interests. Many among them are seen to be openly expressing concern for those who are being left out of the process of development. However, the cynics might say that their concern is because of the fear that unless rural sector is made to look up the gains of the urban classes might be gobbled up.

Jockeying for advantage

From now on all the decisions of the UPA government are going to be dictated by electoral prospects. One can be sure that no hard and harsh decisions can be taken and this explains why there is greater need for wooing the agricultural and rural sector. Then the game between the UPA, particularly the Congress and the Left parties would also become more intense. One should not be surprised if sundry constituents of the UPA jump board if they are convinced of greener pastures elsewhere. Remember Ram Vilas Paswan has also been a part of the NDA government? However, more interesting would be the jockeying for position between the Congress and the Left. One false move by the Congress and it could be advantage the Left as it is already threatening to appropriate the secular middle class.
