Changing Times
This
is that time of the year when spring is in the air. The old
and the dead leaves are being shed and new ones preparing to
take there place. We all know that this is the law of nature
but forget that this law affects the societies considerably.
For, there are periods in the history of nations when
development and change happen at a much faster pace than other
times. In our case we are passing through just one of those
phases. It is not just the economy that is changing at a
faster pace but attitudes in general are also experiencing the
effects. People are no longer prepared to be taken for granted
and they are in no mood to give the rulers much room either,
hence the wholehearted applause for the judiciary when it
delivers justice to those who thought that their right to sit
in legislatures would get them immunity from law. This has
raised the expectations of the people and they want the whole
judicial system to be revamped so that under no pretext common
man is intimidated by a criminal turned politician. It also
need be added that the only people afraid of the judicial
activism are those who were the beneficiaries of the lethargic
pace of justice and the consequent demoralization of the
common man. Happily there is a new breed of politicians who
are feeling more comfortable in a system that is just and
depends on rules and principles that are applied uniformly and
speedily. Such elements need to be given more strength. There
is another change that is in the air: sport has just about
begun a revolution of sorts. There has been heavy bidding for
the team members of cricket’s Indian Premier League. Some
people resent it but the fact remains that if a number of
people are going to earn money then why not the players who
actually sweat to make the money for others. The
transformation would be considered complete only when some
other sports are also organized in the same manner and a
genuine sports culture develops in the country. |
