Why are sports performance poor ?
  • Kavita Datta

The condition of sports in India is declining day by day. After the brief cameo performances by P. T. Usha and Milkha Singh, there has been no growth whatsoever in the field of sports. In the countrywise scoreboard of growth in sports, India occupies a position which is below average. In the last Olympics held in Sydney in 2000, our country won just a single bronze medal in weight lifting which was won by K. Malleshwari. Sports personalities interview in Delhi have different opinions in this regard. Some personalities have negative views and some have positive ideas.

Pramod Sethi, senior sports teacher of Dayanand Anglo-Vedic Public School, is very keen about the improvement of sports. He is working a lot for the achievement of the goal. He is organising sports camps to give proper training to children. He says: "As long as the Government remains indifferent towards the game and players, total improvement is not possible". In his opinion, the Government is merely giving preference to cricket and not to any other game. The other games remain neglected. Cricketers are given much importance and facilities. The players of other games do not even get moral support from the Government and the people.

Politics in sports is one of the reasons for the decline. The higher authorities always try to interfere in the selection procedure which sometimes results in rejection of good players and selection of mediocre players. If such political involvement continues then nobody can stop the decline of sports in our country. Let the players show their performance on the basis of which they should be selected and not on the basis of how powerful a recommendation they can manage.

Olympic bronze medallist
K. Malleshwari has positive thoughts on sports. She says 'Concentration, hard work, sincerity and God's name are the keys to success and nobody can leave you out if you have all these qualities'. Malleshwari is satisfied with the improvement of sports. In her opinion, sports has improved a lot in comparison to the past. In its efforts to give a boost to sports the Government is organising Indian sports camps for players.

Veenu Gopal the basketball coach of Cambridge Foundation School, Rajouri Garden, says that the Government should provide some help-line for players with promise. Because of lack of patronage there are examples of players who are even selling golgappe to earn a livelihood. He says 'The Government should be responsible for their livelihood even after their retirement'. In this context,
K. Malleshwari says: "The Govt. should gave full support to these players and they should be given jobs."

'The Indian players definitely have determination but they are lacking in proper facilities and moral support', says Kulbeer, volleyball coach of Delhi Administration. In his view, if the Government provides the necessary facilities there will definitely be an improvement in the quality of performances. Pramod Sethi, sports coach of DAV School, Vikaspuri, says that Milkha Singh is absolutely justified in his non-acceptance of the Arjuna award. He says, "He does not need this award at all because his time is over and the award should definitely be given to a youngster so that he is encouraged to perform better." K. Malleshwari agrees with Milkha Singh and Pramod Sethi and says "It is a timely award given to a player for his achievements but after 40 years what is the use of giving the Arjuna award to Milkha Singh?" It is clear that if the government accords the proper priority towards sports it can improve by leaps and bounds. K. Malleshwari has a message for aspiring sportspersons: "If you have determination Capability to do hard work and sincerity, then nobody can stop you from achieving your goal."
