Flood situation worsens in Gujarat, Rajasthan, MP
New Delhi, Jul 9 Heavy rains continued to pound parts of Gujarat,
Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, leading to widespread loss of life and
property, while the situation improved in Orissa and West Bengal.
In Gujarat, flood alert has been sounded in over 200
villages in Panchmahal, Ahmedabad, Bharuch and Vadodara after rivers
passing through these districts started swelling.
About 135 villages in Panchmahal alone have been put on alert after four
lakh cusecs of water from the Kadana dam built over Mahisagar river was
released, officials said. The release of water from the Bajaj Sagar dam
in Rajasthan has led to the increase of inflow into Kadana.
Nearly 50 people have been stranded in three villages of Santrampur
taluka and police teams have been deployed to evacuate them. On the
other hand, about 50 families from Khanpur, Kuvajar and Matirija Vejma
villages were evacuated.
In Rajasthan, four children drowned while bathing in rain water-filled
in Jaisalmer district yesterday, police said.
The death toll in rain-related incidents in Madhya Pradesh rose to 35
with 24 fresh deaths reported since yesterday even as rainfall continued
unabated throwing life out of gear in several districts.
Rains lashing parts of Belgaum district in Karnataka claimed two lives
and left large areas inundated.
Elsewhere, in Orissa nine more deaths were reported even as the
situation limped towards normalcy in the state. The scene also improved
in West Bengal where nearly 53 lakh people in eight districts were
affected.
