Cup football has always been the greatest sporting event on earth.
And, every World Cupproduces great players of a new era. South Korea
and Japan are the first ever Asian hosts of FIFA World Cup football.
May be their teams would make diehard efforts to have a chance to
win this title, but these stars have to perform better than each
other to grab unofficial status, who is the ‘best’ among the best.
Yet, their skill and power of the foot will decide the fate of their
team in this World Cup. As billions of eyes follow each and every
move on the ground, they know what performance means to their
countrymen who never want to lose and those whom players like David
Beckham or Rivaldo like a god hanging or pasted on the wall of their
room. They are, of course, going to dominate this whole month in
Japan and Korea. Exactly who are they? Let’s start with the
footballer in the news at the moment and men for whom whole nation
including the PM and the Queen are praying with folded hands.

Luis
Figo (Portugal)
This midfielder can change any game, any time. Real Madrid knew his
capacity and paid almost $28 million to its fierce rival, Barcelona,
for his transfer. Most of people believe he has the devil in his
boots. Figo, FIFA footballer of the year 2001, possessed the most
ideal physique needed for football and is blessed with immaculate
skill. His feet can produce magic. Figo is one of the golden
generation of Portuguese footballers. In Group D, all eyes will be
on him.

David
Beckham (England)
Inspirational English captain who proved the critics wrong. This
injured midfielder has rare talent and is blessed with a vision that
is absent from an English midfielder for years. Captain Backham is a
master of pin-point passing that has made him the world's most
coveted player. His crossings can destroy an opponent’s defence in a
stance. But there is a problem; he is recovering from a foot injury
and the health of the English team in this event depends upon his
well-being.
Rivaldo
(Brazil)
HE has gone through the pain and disappointment
of the final four years ago. The elegant midfield player of
Barcelona has an explosive left foot. However, Rivaldo, a free kick
expert, is receiving criticism for not delivering when the team
badly needed it. Compared to the stocky prototypes of his position—Pele,
Zico, Maradona and others— Rivaldo is an anomaly. Still, he is a key
man in the Brazilian squad. Rivaldo is a simple player with the
individual capacity to decide a game.
Francesco
Totti (Italy)
Totti is the strength of the Italian forward
line. Young Totti does enjoy creating lots of troubles for opponents
with his doses great control on the ball. His skill helped AS Roma
to won a number of titles. Totti , indeed, is a focal point of the
Italian team. If he scores some goals, Italy has a strong
possibility to find a place in the last eight. Other teams have to
work hard on their strategy to keep him under control.
Zinedine
Zidane (France)
DO you remember this name? In the last World Cup
final in his own backyard, Midfielder Zidane shocked Brazilians with
his "guerrilla raids", scored two wining goals and gave a historic
chance to the whole nation to celebrate. This time Zidane is the
most favorite players with bookies. The world’s most expensive
player, (Real Madrid is paying him 47 million ponds), is a hope for
the France to retain its World Cup title.
Hidetoshi
Nakata (Japan)
IN the1998 World Cup in France, Japan shocked
almost all the teams in its group. Not because they were playing
beyond expectations but one player, Nakata. This midfielder would be
a surprise item from Asia for teams like Belgium, Russia and Turkey.
Nakata is a pioneer of the Japanese game. As he has sharpened his
skill by playing with prestigeus clubs like, AS Roma and Parma,
Nakata is now more dangerous than the last World Cup. One more
thing, this time he is playing in his own backyard.
Raul
(Spain)
 God
send him to earth to do one thing, just play football. Tough Spain
is not a favorite one in the wining race; Raul is the biggest worry
for group B teams. His last World Cup performance was a debacle.
This is his last chance to prove himself. As a striker, he will led
the attacks on opponent. He is a perfect player with the ability to
making decisions in a fraction of a second. Signed by his father for
local club Atletico at the age of 13, Roul’s control on the
ball is terrific. Create and convert a chance without error is his
asset. No doubt, he is an anchorman for Spain.
