It's boom or bust for Bollywood
The
show must go on, they say in Bollywood. So despite the series of
flops in the past five months, the film industry is all geared up to
release as many as 28 new productions in the coming three months.
And they include blockbusters like Devdas, made at a cost of
a mindboggling Rs. 40 crore. Sanjay Leela Bansali always dreams big
and has spared no efforts to make his Shah Rukh-Madhuri-Aishwarya
tragic saga into a visual delight. If not for storyline, direction
or music, the film should capture the viewers’ imagination through
its lavish sets and rich costumes.
With the budget of many of the
films averaging nearly Rs. 20 crore, roughly Rs. 500 crore is at
stake. Among the first to hit the screen will be Satish Kaushik’s
Badhai ho Badhai which will be followed by the long-in-the can
movie Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam that has a star cast of Shah
Rukh, Salman and Madhuri. David Dhawan’s comedy Hum Kisise Kum
Nahin starring Amitabh and Ajay Devgan has already generated
interest with the promos.
Anupam Kher tries his luck as
director in Om Jai Jagdish, a tale of three brothers starring
Anil Kapoor, Fardeen and Abhishek. Kher could find the going tough
with Devdas hitting the screen around the same time.
Another Amitabh thriller
following Aankhen, is set for release in July. Kaante
has a very taut plot and the multistarrer has been filmed abroad.
Two big productions on the legendary Bhagat Singh, starring the
Deols and Ajay Devgan, too are racing against time to hit the screen
first. All in all, film buffs never had it so good, though the
industry keeps its fingers crossed with prayers on its lips. |
