Gujarat encounter case: Probe criticised in SC
After the filing of chargesheet in Ahemedabad court in fake encounter
killing case of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, the Gujrat police was accsed of
making mockery of justice and providing a gateway for offender to be let
off in the trail, by the court appointed counsel in supreme court.
However the the allegation was denied by the state government saying the
centre is making the case an issue for the coming assembly election this
year.
"Union of India wants to make it an election issue as the Assembly polls
are to be held this year," Senior advocate K T S Tulsi, appearing for
Gujarat, alleged before a Bench comprising Justices Tarun Chatterjee and
P K Balasubramanyan.
Subramaniam, who brushed aside the allegation, said he was an amicus
curiae in the matter and it was immaterial for him that the case was
used for electoral purpose. He said his only concern was that the
accused be booked.
The ASG said, the court while rejecting CBI probe on May 17, had ordered
independent probe asking Inspector General (CID) Geetha Johri, to
investigate and report it directly.
However, Gujarat's Additional Director General of Police "interposed" in
the investigation, he alleged and added that investigation was a
complete mockery as nothing has been done to piece together the evidence
to establish the motive of the offence in which three persons --
Sohrabuddin, his wife Kauser Bi and a witness were killed. |
