  India-Pak Relations

It is only due to the intervention of the U. S. that a possible Indo-Pakistan war has been averted. One cannot be too sure of the motives and assurances of Gen. Pervez Musharraf. The Pakistani leader is capable of going back on his pledges. Just recently, he told a U. S. magazine that he never said he would crack down on militant groups to check their infiltration into India. Reports from the army commanders near the LoC, too, have indicated that though there is some reduction in the number of militants crossing over, infiltration has not totally stopped. That the militant groups operating in Kashmir have not stopped their violent activities is clear from the daily firings and grenade attacks.

Dhirubhai Ambani’s Vision

The fact that Reliance Industries has millions of shareholders is proof of the investors’ trust in the company. It is a tribute to the vision of the head of the group that Reliance has grown by leaps and bounds in the past two decades. His sons have shown their mettle as leaders and taken the group to great heights. That Dhirubhai was more than a mere industrialist was clear from the concern expressed by many fellow leaders of industry, some of them even rivals, over his sudden hospitalisation with a massive stroke.

Women in Night Shifts

I found the article Should Women Work in Night Shifts? quite interesting. Most women enjoy working, especially in night shifts. For some women, it is the career that is a priority, but for others it is more of an economic necessity. The problems of working couples are many, especially if they have children who often feel neglected. In this respect, night shifts, despite the health hazard, is preferred by women who have husbands who can look after the home at night. This also gives enough time for the women to handle the domestic chores during the day time.

Problems of Lefties

Being a Leftie myself, I fully agree with the write-up on their problems. It is unfortunate that even now they are seen as some sort of freaks by society. As stated in the feature, being left-handed is sometimes inherited and sometimes acquired. But they almost always face problems in a society that is more friendly towards the right-handed. Whether driving, or operating implements that are designed for the right-handed, the Lefties encounter problems.

Using the Hindutva Card

The outfits of the Sangh Parivar are playing a dangerous game in using the Hindutva card to ignite communal passions. In Gujarat as well as in Ayodhya, there is an attempt to whip up violence through hate campaigns. We have seen the disastrous consequences of such dangerous campaigns against the minorities. Now the Vishwa Hindu Parishad is upping the ante by challenging the general view that the court should be the final arbiter of the temple dispute, if a negotiated settlement through dialogue is not possible. The BJP seems not to have learnt the lesson of the U. P. Assembly elections where it was ousted from power, despite playing the temple card.

Change of guard in National Conference

The mantle of leadership of the National Conference has been passed on to his son Omar Abdullah by the Chief Minister, Farooq Abdullah. This is a welcome change. The young and dynamic Omar Abdullah is known for his forthright views. He is never afraid to speak his mind. The NC faces a major challenge in ensuring that the elections in the State are fair and peaceful. It will be better if organisations like the All Party Hurriyat Conference are persuaded to contest the polls so that it can be known whether Kashmiris really sympathise with the militants as claimed by Pakistani authorities.
