Prof.A.P.J. Abdul
Kalam as the next President
The
belated support by the Congress to the ruling NDA's worthy nominee
Professor A.P.J. Abdul Kalam as the next President of India is a
welcome decision in the national interest. It is unfortunate that the
NDA played politics in even naming the great personality as its
candidate. It is clear that if the NDA had floated Kalam's name as an
option for a consensus nominee rather than as its own candidate, even
the Left parties would have supported Kalam instead of fielding the
veteran freedom fighter Captain Lakshmi Seghal for a symbolic contest.
The entire episode has insulted other dignitaries like K. R.
Narayanan, P. C. Alexander, Krishna Kant etc. whose names were floated
as probable candidates.
For avoiding unnecessary costly
contests for such dignified high posts, members of the Electoral
College with minimum twenty
per cent value of total votes must sign nomination papers of the
candidates. For impartial conduct of Lok Sabha proceedings, the Lower
House should also be presided over a second Vice President. The two
Vice Presidents may be elected simultaneously with the President in
the manner The President is elected by all MPs and MLAs. The Senior
Vice President may be made President for the rest of the term in case
of mid-term vacancy in the post of President.

The right choice
There
is no doubt that in scientist A.P.J. Abdul Kalam we have one of the
most qualified persons for the post of the President. It is ridiculous
for the Left parties to accuse him of being ignorant about politics.
In fact, that is a plus point. We have seen how too much politics in
Rashtrapati Bhavan has created problems for the elected Prime
Minister. As President, Kalam is sure to take a scientific approach to
the problems that he might have to face in the future. By
unnecessarily forcing a contest, the Leftists have left a bitter taste
in the Presidential election.

College rush
As
a student, I found the article on college admissions interesting. I’m
glad that you are taking interest in youth issues. It’s unfortunate
that university rules bar those below a particular percentage of marks
to opt for the course they desire. Girl students coming to Delhi find
accommodation a major problem. The private hostels charge huge rents
with hardly any facilities. Granted the standard of education is
better in the campus colleges, but girls from outside the Capital have
to think twice before applying for admission.

Tension with
Pakistan
Though
President Musharraf has agreed to check the entry of militants from
PoK under U. S. pressure, judging by past record, one cannot trust the
General. He has in the past, gone back on his promises. He could do it
again. The U. S. is keen that there should not be a war as it fears if
Musharraf is in trouble, American interests could be jeopardised.
Rightly or wrongly, the Indian government has been emphasising on a
diplomatic offensive rather than on a military offensive. This has
apparently given the impression to Islamabad that New Delhi will stop
at angry rhetoric, but will not follow it up with any military action.

Dusky Bipasha
Bipasha
Basu is my favourite. I admire her for her fighting spirit that has
taken her to great heights in Bollywood. It is not easy for an actress
without a godfather to come up in the cut-throat Mumbai film industry.
It is a tribute to her hard work and looks as a sultry model that she
has bagged some big banners, and working with top heroes. I want to
read features on other upcoming actresses in your future issues.
