  BJP, a party with difference?

Followers of the Swadeshi concept are not supposed to blink their eyes at things called "foreign". Especially people like Murli Manohar Joshi who are known as committed Swadeshi lobbyists, are not expected to take a U-turn on matters which may in the long run affect the interests of the country. But, by giving strong support to foreign investment in the print media, these people have shown that they can prove the common-held perception about them wrong. Surprisingly, the RSS too has preferred to keep silent on FDI in print. Its much talked about Swadeshi Jagran Manch, which has in the past raised the banner against any thing wearing a foreign tag, has not yet squeaked on foreign investment in the print media.—Something must have been cooked up before the cabinet’s controversial decision on FDI in print, conjectured a veteran journalist who covers political parties. Nevertheless, the decision has once again exposed the BJP’s hollow claim that it is a party with difference.

Tehelka offices raided by CBI

The CBI conducted raids at the Tehelka.com office shortly before the Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of the news portal Tarun Tejpal was to appear before the Venkataswami Commission on June 26.

Tejpal saw a motive in the raids and alleged the timing was sinister. "We feel this is another attempt to harass and victimise us since the case began a year and a half ago." The raids were conducted under the Wild Life Act. The CBI is investigating two cases in which Tehelka reporters allegedly involved. The first case is about procuring classified documents from the Ministry of Home Affairs and the second one relates to poaching in the jungles of the Saharanpur hills.

The raid came on the day when Samata Party leader Jaya Jaitly was deposing before the Venkataswami Commission, which is looking into allegations made in the Tehelka tapes. Jaitly had resigned as Samata Party president after the Tehelka tapes were released.

The portal has been alleging that the government had been harassing it for exposing shady dealings in the defence establishment. The exposure led to the resignation of the then BJP president Bangaru Laxman, who was filmed wilt a hidden camera accepting bundles of currency.

Who will be the next FM?

Capital’s political circles are agog with the guessing game on the next Finance Minister. There seems to be general consensus that the present FM Yashwant Sinha will be eased out. The RSS lobby has been very unhappy with Sinha’s brand of economic reforms and have urged the Prime Minister to get a new man for the job of handling the country’s economy. The one-time front runner Arun Shourie, currently the Disinvestment Minister, seems to have lost out following the row with Telecom Minister Pramod Mahajan in the VSNL sellout. The choice seems to have narrowed down to M.M. Joshi and Law Minister Arun Jaitley in the Cabinet reshuffle expected by the first week of July.
