The Company has always been able to successfully negotiate the sharp edges of continuously emerging new challenges of the dynamic business environment by harnessing its most valuable asset, its professional manpower, which the Company immensely cares for and continuously nurtures to meet the challenges of future.

In a competitive industry, driven by technology, SIL has thoroughly restructured itself and continues to fine-tune its operations to become more responsive and efficient in delivering its products and services.

The gross turnover of the company was increased by 13.71% in 2002-03 and 10.39% in 2003-04. In the same periods, the net profit was also increased by 17.26% and 19.24%, respectively.

The SIL was incorporated in 1972 taking over plant, machinery, design, drawing, documentation, copyrights etc., lock-stock and barrel from M/s Innocenti, Italy.  The plant was for production of scooters with brand name LAMBRETTA.  The engineers of the company commissioned the old machinery imported from Italy in 1974 and the prototype of the vehicle was accepted in VRDE in January 1975.  The commercial production started

thereafter in February 1975 with the brand name Vijai Deluxe.  The capacities were built for production of 1,00,000 units of scooters each year. SIL launched Vijai Super scooter in February 1977, which was improved version of Vijai Deluxe.

Recognising the need for urban transportation, the company developed indigenously its first petrol-based three-wheeler on Italian design in 1978. Presently, the company has several models of Vikram 3-wheelers in all possible fuel modes ranging from Vikram 750-D, Vikram 450-D, Vikram LPG, Vikram CNG and Vikram EV.  Scooters India Limited was the first company to make Electric 3-wheeler in the world.  It is zero pollution 3-wheeler and has been successfully launched in several cities of India like Lucknow, Agra, Delhi, Jaipur. Response from 3-wheelers was such that the company in 1996 decided to discontinue its 2-wheeler operation and concentrate only on 3-wheelers.

The company got ISO-14001 certificate in March 2002, which ensures implementation of environment friendly processes and systems for welfare of its employees and society as whole.  P K Datta, chairman and managing director of SIL firmly believes that the company has lots of potential for growth.

The company is in the process of modernising its production facilities to make available the latest techno-logy so that products with superior quality and finish are made available to its customers. The Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises has agreed to provide all necessary help to the company in this regards.
