The son on the road!
Finally, Rahul Gandhi has taken the plunge. He hit the roads of dusty
Uttar Pradesh and the response that he got must have gladdened the
hearts of the Congressmen. It wasn’t just the curious who came out on
the roads to have a glimpse of the most talked about son of the family.
Going by the response that he got every where it was obvious that the
people in the most populous state of the country are so disgusted with
the run of the mill politicians that they would happily go back to the
Nehru-Gandhi family. His minor blemishes, like the comment regarding
Babri Masjid, have been easily forgotten and his charm remembered. His
reaching out to the people has, however, not gone down well with the NSG
officials. Understandably they fear for his life but then is there any
other effective way of reaching out to people?
LTTE’s air power
The daring raid by a low flying aero plane on the high security Sri
Lankan air base has sent shock waves not only in the island but in India
too. It is obvious that the plane was assembled in LTTE territory from
parts smuggled from India. The implication is that with the new
development it is not only the Sri Lankan security that is threatened
but also India’s. It is now widely being believed that during the past
few years the killers of Rajiv Gandhi have become stronger in the
country and that there are a number of forces within the country that
are supporting Prabhakaran in his design. Sri Lanka would do well if it,
instead of trying to use India, genuinely works in tandem with India and
other interested parties to weaken the common enemy, militarily as well
as democratically.
Rain, rain go away!
The unseasoned rains have really become a reason to worry in the valley.
While for a few days people rejoiced in the fresh snowfall it was soon
realized that the prolonged spell of rain is also a sign that the coming
months might not be good for the crops. Rain in the late winter months
have often meant that the water does not drain out with the result that
sowing is delayed. Consequently, before the crop is ready for harvesting
the autumn arrives and with it go the hopes of food for the populace.
Not surprisingly, tourists are not aware of this and are therefore
rejoicing in something that can turn out to be a curse for the local
people.
The Cup of woes!
With the early exit from the Cricket World Cup the cup of woes for the
advertisers is full. There few people interested in watching matches in
which the Indian team has no stake. Add to it the fact that the host
team is also not doing well and consequently the stadiums too are empty.
It was hoped that the super eight group matches would bring back the
crowds but this hope too has been belied. The truth is that this world
cup is going to be a disastrous event that everybody, except the winner,
would like to forget. Meanwhile, in India the knives out not only for
the coach and the captain but also for the players and the Board, too. |
